Fine grain leather shoes need polishing and buffing with a soft cloth.
Split leather or nubuck shoes should be cleaned with a stiff brush. When they're really dirty, clean with soapy water and leave to dry. After cleaning, add some shine with a coloured or clear leather spray.
Wait until any dirt or mud on your shoes is dry before brushing it off. Use a soft brush, but don't use any water which will just dilute the dirt into the fabric.
If your shoes get wet, stuff newspaper into them to absorb the damp and help them keep their shape. Leave them to dry somewhere well-ventilated, but keep them out of direct sunlight to prevent the colours fading. Avoid strong heat sources such as radiators or a hair dryer : this causes shoes to become stiff and makes the leather brittle.
If possible, remove the insole and leave it to air-dry.

REMEMBER TO WATERPROOF HIS SHOES !
